Author Lois Lowry – The Giver, Number the Stars, Gathering Blue, Gossamer, and Find a Stranger, Say Goodbye
Lois Lowry is a multi-award-winning author who has
written many popular books. She is best known for The
Giver, her dark, thought provoking, and controversial
fantasy, and for Number the Stars, a children's novel
about the Holocaust. She received the prestigious Newbery
Medal for each of these books. In addition to these popular
titles, Lowry has written more than thirty books for
children and young teens, including several series such as
the popular Anastasia Krupnik books.
Whether she’s writing comedy, adventure, or poignant, powerful drama—from Attaboy, Sam! and Anastasia Krupnik to Number the Stars and The Giver—Lois Lowry’s appeal is as broad as her subject matter and as deep as her desire to affect an eager generation of readers. Lois Lowry didn’t start writing professionally until she was in her mid-30s but now spends time writing every single day. Before she begins writing a book, she usually knows the beginning and end of her story. When she’s not writing, Lowry enjoys gardening during the spring and summer and knitting during the winter. One of her other hobbies is photography, and her own photos grace the covers of Number the Stars, The Giver, and Gathering Blue. She lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts. |

Nationally syndicated columnist on
literature, Kendal Rautzhan Kendal Rautzhan’s mission is to provide adults with easy, practical suggestions to help young readers connect with books and reading in a positive way. As a weekly national columnist on children’s literature for twenty-three years, Rautzhan is considered an expert in her field. Books to Borrow…Books to Buy reaches over 2 million households each week with an enthusiastic readership. Rautzhan has an objective and discerning eye for what works in children’s literature, what doesn’t, and why. In addition to her weekly newspaper column, Rautzhan takes her message on the road with talks and seminars for adults, college students, and elementary and middle school children. "I firmly believe that excellent children’s literature delivers important messages that are as relevant to an 80-year-old as they are to an 8-year-old. I will discuss why that is, the “bones” of those kinds of stories, and highlight with examples. Furthermore, I will address specific children’s stories that act as a springboard for conversation on issues of importance, such as compassion and empathy." - Kendal Rautzhan |
